Here at Notepad, we use creativity every day, and it’s almost impossible to imagine a world without it. Creativity is part of being human and connecting to the world. Creative thinking is a vital part of what makes us human, it allows us to reimagine what’s possible! And without it, our future would be pretty damn bleak.
So what will the future of creativity look like? We know we need it, but will the way we create, think about and experience creativity change? Nobody can be certain, but we asked our in-house design team for their opinions and here’s what they had to say:
“The future of creativity will be super collaborative. A place where people and technology combine their specialisms to create work on a new scale. As technology continues to evolve, the whole creative process will change with it.”
– Andy Norman
“It will be further focused on authenticity and relatability. And soon we’ll have the ability to make pretty much anything as long as you have a laptop. But when anything is possible, the novelty of new technologies can wear thin and we harken back to what we left behind or lost with this new extension.”
– Josh Cutts
“The future of creativity will be shaped by changes in societal attitudes. As people become more aware of social and environmental issues, there will be a greater emphasis on using creativity to address these challenges. This will lead to more socially responsible creativity that prioritises sustainability, diversity, and inclusion.”
– Liam Basford
“Everything is evolving with AI technology which I think will ultimately push everyone in the creative industry to think bigger. I think people will be scared by it but we can use it to our advantage and look at it all as a positive to help us grow and push boundaries. Creativity is innately a very human thing so we have the upper hand that way, but I think the AI evolution will help create a new field of experimentation.”
– Naomi Chilton
So that’s what our in-house designers had to say about the future of creativity! And from this, there are strong themes of collaboration between technology and creatives where ideas and creativity can be enhanced and made possible through new and exciting technological advances. This sparked our thinking and we wanted to further our understanding of what other people in the creative industry had to say about the future of creativity! And here’s what we found:
“Creativity is vital in placemaking, regeneration and supporting strong resilient communities – absolutely necessary in the challenging years ahead. Creative skills are key to unlocking the opportunities of the fourth industrial revolution. Quite frankly, they are essential to our social and economic survival.”
– Professor Emma Hunt, vice-chancellor and chief executive at Falmouth University
“Collaboration is the future. She believes that one never finds their practice, rather it’s a constantly shape-shifting process, and something to enjoy along with the conversations that happen in between them. Her trust in community, grassroots guidance (for herself) and for future talent is key.”
– Lilian Nejatpour, a British Iranian artist who shifts between making sculptural forms and sound structures
“The future of creativity is collaborative. The more collaborative, the better. That does not mean the devaluation of individual talent. On the contrary, there will always be a place for those who want to face great challenges.”
– Alexandre Tommasi, founder of Best Fiend and renowned creative director and D&AD judge
“Creation existing alongside loss in an era of ecological disaster, how we’ll see more unlikely collaborations between humans and non-humans and also how we’ll find ourselves doing more scrappy, experimental work.”
– Bea Karol Burks, previous Director of Explorations at Nesta
There’s no right or wrong answer
As we mentioned before, nobody can be certain what the future of creativity holds. And I guess that’s what makes it all the more exciting.
But from our research, and understanding of different perspectives, we believe that collaboration between people and AI technology will be a huge part of the future. And technology will enable us to think and create new and exciting opportunities that also have a positive impact on society and the world around us.
So that’s what our design team and a handful of perspectives from the internet had to say about the future of creativity and the challenges ahead of us. But did you know that we’ll be delving into these challenges much further at our Untapped event in May 2023?! Where we’ll be bringing together expert speakers on the matter and tackling the challenges and opportunities facing commercial creativity.
Come and join us at our in-person event in Birmingham city centre on Thursday, May 4th 2023! We’d love to see you there!
